World Youth Skills Day: The Leadership and Talent Centre
On World Youth Skills Day, we’re reminded that skills can change the course of a life.
For thousands of children and young people living on the streets of Nairobi, Kenya, the opportunity to learn, work and build a future has been replaced by the daily struggle to survive. That’s why we’re so grateful to everyone who shares our vision of standing alongside homeless young people and helping them rebuild their lives.
The need is immense:
- Around 300,000 children and young people are estimated to be homeless across Kenya.
- Approximately 60,000 are living and working on the streets of Nairobi.
Our response is The Leadership and Talent Centre, just outside the bustling city of Nairobi, and currently in the very early stages of materialising into a tangible building construction. This centre will provide vulnerable young people with the support, skills and opportunities they need not simply to survive, but to thrive.
Before these young people are ready to learn vocational or business skills, they first need a safe place to heal. Many have experienced trauma, family breakdown, exploitation or substance addiction. Our residential rehabilitation programme is designed to help restore confidence, rebuild relationships and support reintegration into families and society wherever possible.
Alongside rehabilitation, the centre will offer:
- Counselling
- Nutritious meals
- Gospel teachings
- Sports activities
- Non-formal education
- Vocational training
- Business management skills training
- Group discussions
- Camping and other creative activities
We’re gradually expanding the site so that we can welcome around 20 street youth at a time into the residential programme. There is still a long road ahead, but every step brings us closer to creating a place of hope, healing and opportunity for young people who desperately need it.
Will you help us build that future?
