Finding God’s blessing in small moments

Over the Christmas period, many celebrations took place across the International Needs network. Behind one of those celebrations are three real stories from Burkina Faso, and they’re worth slowing down for…

First is Mariam*. She’s 10 years old and has faced more challenges than any child should, living as an internally displaced child. She has a deep longing for things to feel normal again.

But at the party, sitting with friends, sharing laughter and enjoying a special meal, Mariam felt pure joy.

"I felt God's blessing in this moment. For once, I felt like a normal child celebrating Christmas. I thank God and everyone who made this day possible for us."

The second story is from Issa*. At just 17, he has endured unimaginable hardship. During terrorist attacks in his home area, he witnessed horrors that forced him to flee. He is now separated from most of his family, with no news of where they are. The weight of loss and fear sits heavily on his shoulders, and hope can often feel far away.

During the Christmas celebrations, Issa experienced peace and was reminded that God’s love can shine even in the darkest moments.

"The meal gave me joy and hope. I ate until I was satisfied, laughed with the other children, and felt God’s love surrounding us. Even in hard times, I realised that God provides and blesses us through the care of others."

Lastly, we hear from Azeta*, aged 11 and also an internally displaced refugee.

"This Christmas is very special for me. When I heard that we would receive a hot meal and drinks, I was very happy and could not stop smiling. The food and the drink really made my Christmas. I was happy to share this moment with other children, and I felt that someone was truly thinking about us.""Thank you very much to everyone who gave us this meal. Because of you, I had a joyful Christmas, and I felt loved, even though I am far from my home village."
