Every Broken Dream

Heather and Steve Dancy

Steve and Heather Dancy were long-term supporters of International Needs, until Heather tragically passed away after a short illness in September 2021. The impact of their giving will live on, particularly in the lives of the sponsored children they supported in Kenya and in the maternity wing of our healthcare centre in Bobo-Dioulasso, which was generously backed by the Dancy family.

Steve writes: ‘In September 2021, my lovely wife Heather died of pancreatic cancer. It was a very brief illness, as she died just over three weeks after diagnosis. I was brokenhearted, especially having such little time to adjust to the idea that I was losing her.

‘The best tribute to Heather was in the eulogy given by our daughter, Rachel: “My Mum loved God, loved her friends and family, and loved trying to make other people’s lives better.”

Every Broken Dream was initially written as a short poem four months later, while my dad was dying in hospital. So I had a double shot of bereavement to deal with.

‘I know many people have found themselves in similar circumstances. Particularly with the arrival of COVID-19, we’ve all had to face more bereavement than we might have expected. So I don’t think this song – set to music and recorded by my friend Nick Marshall – is special because of what my family and I have gone through, but because I was able to express the hope that has upheld us through it all. It is my hope that some of my fellow sufferers might be able to find the same comfort that has upheld me.’
