Helping families in Sri Lanka access clean water
In remote farming communities in Monaragala, Sri Lanka, many families continue to rely on shallow and deteriorating wells for their drinking water. During long dry seasons, entire villages face severe water shortages, making daily life increasingly difficult.
Without reliable access to clean water, families are more vulnerable to illness, poor harvests, debt, and poverty.
Unpredictable rainfall has also made farming much harder, leaving many households struggling to grow crops and earn a stable income.

Chandrika, who lives in Mayuragama, explains:
“The main problem we have in this village is the shortage of water. Because of that we do not have drinking water and water for cultivation. In August and September each year, the entire village faces extreme conditions and many difficulties due to lack of water. Most villagers have kidney and urinary tract related diseases because of this.”

Above is an example of a newly installed agricultural well, providing safe water for local families.
Through this project, we are helping communities move from vulnerability towards long term resilience through a practical and community led approach. We are improving access to safe drinking water, expanding agricultural water systems, supporting farmers to improve crop production, and helping women develop sustainable livelihoods and financial independence.
Thanks to support already received, household water filters have been distributed, tube wells have been installed, and more families now have access to safe drinking water. Farmers are beginning to increase their incomes through improved cultivation, and women’s self help groups are now meeting and receiving training.

Watch our short video to learn how this project is bringing clean water and hope to communities in Sri Lanka.
Our goal is to raise £10,000 in 2026 to continue transforming lives in Monaragala and help families move from simply surviving to truly thriving.
Every donation will help bring clean water, opportunity, and hope to communities that need it most.

1
Safe drinking water
We are helping families gain reliable access to safe drinking water through household water filters and newly constructed tube wells within their communities.

2
Agricultural water access
We are improving water systems for farming so families can grow crops more reliably, even during increasingly difficult dry seasons.

3
Farming and livelihoods
We are supporting farmers with training, seeds, technical guidance, and market access to help improve harvests and increase household income.

4
Women’s empowerment
We are helping women establish self help groups and livelihood opportunities that strengthen confidence, financial independence, and resilience for their families.

£55 provides one person with improved access to clean water
Access to clean water changes every part of daily life. It reduces illness, improves health, and gives families more time and energy to focus on farming, education, and earning an income.
Reliable agricultural water also helps farmers grow crops more successfully, even during difficult seasons, creating greater food security and financial stability.
By combining clean water access with farming support and women’s livelihood training, this project is helping communities build lasting resilience and create a more hopeful future for the next generation.

Our impact so far
Since the project began:
Household water filters are now being used consistently by families and are providing safe drinking water across all surveyed households.
Two newly constructed tube wells have been completed and are already serving beneficiary communities, significantly increasing access to clean water.
Water quality testing has confirmed that the wells remain within safe limits, while further monitoring will continue as the wells stabilise over time.
Maize farmers have successfully harvested and started selling produce, supported through technical guidance and improved market access.
Preparations for chilli cultivation are underway, including farmer selection, seed procurement, land preparation, and agricultural training.
272 women have engaged in livelihoods training across 9 women’s groups, helping strengthen financial independence and future income opportunities.
Planning has also begun for the construction of an additional tube well and the expansion of agricultural water systems to support more families in Year 2.
