Support Ukrainian child refugees in Romania
Supporting Ukrainian refugee children in Romania
£45,583 to go
Target: £135,583
urgent support is required
6.7 million people have fled Ukraine since the full-scale invasion by Russia began in February 2022. The overwhelming majority have remained in Europe, hoping to return home once peace is restored. But many families have been fragmented in the process – with husbands and fathers having to stay behind in Ukraine ready for conscription into the armed forces at a moment’s notice. After working directly in Ukraine during the initial relief phase, we have partnered with IN in neighbouring Romania to provide a longer-term support system for Ukrainian refugees.
project overview
Our impact
Supporting Ukrainian refugee children in Romania
Tens of thousands of refugees have moved to neighbouring Romania, where International Needs has set up a kindergarten, day care centre and temporary school. These facilities seek to provide Ukrainian youngsters with a reassuring, secure presence. Somewhere to be themselves. Somewhere to enjoy each other's company and to participate in age-appropriate activities. Trauma care is provided through art therapy and through the use of traditional story telling, providing a safe space to address the trauma of witnessing conflict and missile attacks first hand.
Every penny you give will be truly appreciated by Ukrainian refugee children and their families. New art and craft materials will help youngsters express themselves creatively, even when they cannot verbalise the trauma they have witnessed since the Russian invasion. Your gift could provide healthy lunchtime meals for a week for three Ukrainian teenagers attending our temporary school. Or it could go towards a great new selection of robust, age-appropriate toys for our kindergarten in Danes, providing fun ways to connect and rekindle a childhood. A specially-trained psychologist is available to children and their families to provide professional support.

stories
Angelina, 14, lived in Odesa region with her mother and grandmother, who abused alcohol. At the beginning of the war, she was taken away from her family and went initially to Bulgaria to claim asylum.
Angelina arrived in Romania with her foster family and a few days later learned that her mother had died of alcohol poisoning. Living in a family that abused alcohol, being removed from the family, living in a foster home, and forced emigration was understandably a traumatic series of events.
Thanks to IN Romania, Angelina received qualified psychological help and educational assistance. She was withdrawn, had no friends, could not trust anyone, and did not want to make contact with adults and children.
Thanks to the programme and qualified help, Angelina’s life is gradually returning to normal. She likes art classes and cooking most of all. She is now fluent in Romanian and easily understands the material, which means that her emotional wellbeing is improving.
She made friends through the teenage meeting programme among both Ukrainian and Romanian youth, ensuring lasting relationships that will help them all through this challenging and isolating time.
How we spend your money
For every £1 you donate to this appeal, we will allocate 25p of your donation to cover general support and running costs. There is a small chance that we will raise more money than is needed for this appeal. If this happens, we'll spend any additional funds on other International Needs projects – wherever the need is greatest.
